Indian-origin PhD student found dead in lake after going missing on solo hiking trip

Chemical engineering PhD candidate Vikram Mubayi from India was discovered deceased in California's Inyo National Forest on August 3, two days after he went missing during a solo hiking expedition in the Big Pine Lakes region. According to local reports, Mubayi last communicated with his family on the evening of August 1 before a search operation was initiated by Inyo County Search & Rescue.

Authorities subsequently recovered Mubayi's body from Big Pine Lakes, but the circumstances leading to his demise are still under investigation, with no signs of criminal intent.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi was an experienced hiker, as confirmed by his family. His sibling posted on Reddit, expressing concern about his whereabouts, providing details of his appearance, height, weight, and the specific area where he had gone missing. The sibling shared a link to his Strava route for reference and described Mubayi's expected return time. Mubayi's car remained at the trailhead, indicating he was not at his destination as planned.

The official confirmation of Mubayi's death has yet to be released by the authorities, leaving the family and concerned individuals eagerly awaiting further details.
