Here's what Hiroshima looks like today, 81 years after the atomic bomb

Eighty-one years after the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, transforming it from a bustling manufacturing hub to a somber reminder of its painful past, the city has endured and thrived. On August 6, 1945, during World War II, the Enola Gay, a US bomber, unleashed the first atomic weapon ever used in military combat, killing 80,000 people instantly and destroying about two-thirds of the city's structures.

Today, Hiroshima boasts a population of over 1.1 million and is a thriving industrial center. The bombing's immediate impact claimed 80,000 lives and injured 35,000 more, with the death toll rising to 60,000 by the end of 1945. Despite the devastation, the city has rebuilt and expanded, becoming a symbol of resilience and commitment to peace.

The Atomic Bomb Dome, one of the few structures that survived the blast, now stands as a powerful symbol of Hiroshima's history. Known as the Genbaku Dome, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and serves as a center for peace activism, especially during the annual commemoration of the bombing. The Memorial Dome, part of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, pays homage to the victims and offers interactive exhibits that highlight the consequences of nuclear warfare.

Hiroshima's transformation extends beyond its physical landscape. The city continues to innovate and expand, with plans for the Hiroshima 2045: City of Peace and Creativity, aiming to design a modern, distinctive urban landscape. As an industrial hub, Hiroshima hosts major companies, including the automobile manufacturer Mazda, and offers a vibrant food and drink scene, with specialties like okonomiyaki, oysters, and red pepper cold noodles.
