Brandon Aiyuk’s NFL future remains uncertain without eligibility to play, unless he takes one step

Brandon Aiyuk's NFL career remains uncertain as he faces an ineligible player status, which has persisted for over eight months. The 28-year-old San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is currently barred from playing for the 49ers or any other NFL team, as he cannot take even a single step towards reinstatement. Aiyuk's situation began after he went AWOL amid contract disputes, leading to the voiding of 2026 guarantees and his placement on the 49ers' left squad list.

To regain eligibility, Aiyuk must reach out to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, sending him a letter and a copy to the 49ers. However, Aiyuk has reportedly stopped communicating with the team since the disputes began, making the reinstatement process increasingly difficult. While on the left team list, Aiyuk does not count against the 49ers' roster or salary cap, and the team receives no pay, giving them no incentive to release him and incurring millions in dead cap when he could be wiped from their cap.

Aiyuk's only potential suitor, the Washington Commanders, has reportedly signed Stefon Diggs for $12 million, removing the only viable option for his 'free agency.' This has further complicated Aiyuk's career status, as he cannot return to the NFL for at least a few more seasons. The franchise has no motivation to remove him from the left squad list, while Aiyuk shows no intent to fight for reinstatement.

With the Commanders now off the table, Aiyuk must actively participate in the due process to try and revive his NFL career.
