Women spearheading resistance to Infantino as FIFA faces governance crisis

Two prominent women, Laura McAllister from Wales and Lise Klaveness from Norway, have emerged as leading voices in the ongoing revolt against FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The controversy stems from Infantino's failed attempt to push through a private equity-backed venture called FIFA Football Enterprises (FFE).

McAllister, a UEFA vice-president, and Klaveness, a lawyer and former international player, have been vocal critics of Infantino's governance style. They argue that the issue is more complex than simply electing a female president and that football needs to catch up with societal changes. Klaveness, praised by former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, emphasized the need for a woman to lead the sport's governing body, but cautioned against forcing the issue.

The tension within FIFA has grown as several national associations, including Wales, have withdrawn support for Infantino's re-election. The controversy has brought to light deeper governance problems at FIFA, including links to the failed European Super League project, political issues surrounding the World Cup, and the rescinding of a red card shown to American striker Folarin Balogun. These controversies have eroded trust in Infantino's leadership.

McAllister and Klaveness, both values-driven individuals with backgrounds in women's football, believe that football should remain true to its core values. They argue that the game should be accessible to everyone and not controlled by private capital or political interference. Despite the challenges, McAllister stressed the importance of building momentum gradually rather than attempting a sudden revolution.
