Ukraine: Russian strikes on Kyiv, surrounding region kill at least 14

Russian missile strikes on Kyiv and surrounding areas early Wednesday resulted in at least 14 fatalities and numerous injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks commenced after midnight, triggering air raid sirens that echoed across the capital for hours. Ukraine's air force had previously warned of incoming ballistic missiles.

Seven locations within Kyiv were reported to be hit by the strikes, causing damage to residential buildings and warehouses. Mayor Vitali Klitschko disclosed that one warehouse near the city center was completely destroyed, and rescue teams recovered two individuals from the rubble. However, there were no confirmed reports of individuals still trapped under the debris.

An early report of a burning 20-story apartment building was later debunked, although a significant fire erupted on the outskirts of the city. Debris from a downed missile struck a residential area, and an ammonia leak also occurred, prompting emergency crews to contain the incident. Ukrainian air defense forces actively engaged in shooting down the incoming missiles.

This escalation marks the latest in a series of Russian strikes targeting Kyiv over the past month. On Saturday, the capital and its suburbs were targeted by Russian missiles, resulting in ten deaths and over thirty injuries. The same day, Ukrainian drones successfully sank a Russian vessel in the Black Sea. Both nations have intensified their long-range strikes in recent weeks, with Russia deploying more than twice the number of missiles in July compared to previous months, as reported by the French AFP news agency.

Ukraine has also escalated its drone attacks on Russian infrastructure, including oil, gas, and supply sites. On Tuesday, Russian forces suffered five casualties and ten injuries following strikes in the Moscow region, primarily impacting warehouses of the retail giant Wildberries. Moscow's mayor reported that the city's air defenses neutralized at least ten drones on Wednesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has implored allies for additional Patriot missile interceptors, expressing concern that the shortage of such defenses emboldens Russia to launch attacks causing human casualties. Zelenskyy met with US President Donald Trump last Tuesday to advocate for licensing the construction of Patriot systems within Ukraine.

United Nations human rights observers have voiced apprehensions over the rising civilian casualties during the conflict, which now rank among the highest since Russia's invasion began in February 2022. Both Russia and Ukraine firmly deny engaging in civilian-targeting activities during the war.
