Turbulent tenure expected for new Negeri Sembilan MB

Negeri Sembilan's newly appointed menteri besar, Ismail Lasim, faces potential turbulence in his tenure, according to analysts. Several state Umno chiefs, including Jalaluddin Alias, missed Ismail's swearing-in ceremony, which analysts interpret as a sign of potential internal power struggles within Umno. Azmi Hassan, an analyst from Akademi Nusantara, posits that Ismail's appointment, despite his extensive governance experience, has caught many off guard, suggesting he may face a challenging political environment.

Asrul Sani of the Asia Group emphasizes the need for Ismail to navigate complex political dynamics as he begins his term, particularly in managing optics ahead of the next general election. He argues that removing him before the election would be politically damaging for Umno and PN, as both parties aim to present a united front for stability.

The state's political landscape, with the BN party holding a two-thirds majority in the assembly, suggests Ismail's position may be more secure initially. However, Asrul anticipates that serious challenges to his leadership could emerge post-election, influenced by the evolving power balance between BN, PN, and Pakatan Harapan. Ismail's selection of state executive council members will be crucial for his survival, as he will need support from Umno, PAS, and Wawasan assemblymen.

Despite the challenges, Azmi believes Ismail's seasoned political background gives him the acumen to weather the current storm.
