Three confirmed dead in Aboso explosion as police probe suspected illegal storage of explosives

In Aboso, near Tarkwa, a tailings site explosion claimed three lives and injured another three, according to Western Central Regional Police Command. Preliminary reports indicate the blast was likely caused by the illegal storage of explosives. The incident unfolded around midday on Tuesday, August 4, when workers noticed a python and alerted the site owner, David Kofi Fletcher.

Fletcher allegedly shot at the snake with a pump-action shotgun, setting off a powerful explosion. Fletcher and two others, identified as Solomon and Baba, were killed, while three others suffered injuries and are hospitalized. The blast also damaged nearby properties, shattering windows and damaging vehicles. Police responded swiftly to the scene and are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

The Minerals Commission has been notified and is cooperating with the police. The police have warned the public against the illegal possession, storage, handling, or sale of explosives, emphasizing the threat it poses to public safety. Residents are urged to report any suspected illegal activities to the nearest police station as investigations proceed.
