Brazil downgrades ties with Argentina to chargé d'affaires level over Milei's remarks

On Tuesday, Brazil downgraded its diplomatic ties with Argentina to chargé d'affaires level, halting the return of its ambassador in Buenos Aires, Julio Glinternick Bitelli. This marks the first time in decades that Brazil has taken such a step with Argentina. The embassy in Buenos Aires will continue operating, but without a career diplomat leading it.

This move is in response to Argentine President Javier Milei's recent criticisms of his counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira summoned Argentina's ambassador, Daniel Raimondi, and delivered a protest note outlining the decision. There is no formal expulsions or labeling of Milei as persona non grata.

As long as Milei continues his attacks, Brazil maintains this downgrade. Lula has not publicly commented on the matter. Argentina's foreign ministry stated that the measure was unilateral and expressed regret over Brazil's decision to isolate itself over ideological disagreements. They argued that many political statements and endorsements between their countries in the past have not resulted in diplomatic incidents.

The crisis began on July 25 when Milei called Lula a thief, convict, and socialist garbage at a political convention, among other insults. The decision to downgrade relations was made after Milei's continued disparaging remarks.
