Transpower issues power warning

Transpower has issued a warning that there may be a power shortage on Friday morning, due to the highest electricity demand ever recorded on Wednesday morning. The company has put out a customer advice notice, aimed at power companies rather than the public. The warning comes after a generation unit experienced a fault and was removed from service late Tuesday night, reducing the available supply.

However, Transpower's executive general manager, Chantelle Bramley, stated that the power system remained secure and there was no impact on consumers. Power companies have been requested to ensure accurate energy, wind generation, reserve offers, and transmission offers. This is the first stage in Transpower's process of highlighting potential issues, which can range from 36 hours to one hour before a shortfall is expected.

The notices are intended to signal to the market that supply is tight and to help generators submit their bids in advance. Meridian spokesperson said the notices are not uncommon over winter and that the company is generating hard. Brad Olsen, Infometrics principal economist, noted that the notice is a proactive alert, highlighting the need for long-term investment in energy infrastructure.
