Lazio Turn to Belgian Defender After Missing Out on Two Previous Targets

Lazio are exploring the option of signing Belgian centre-back Ibe Hautekiet from Standard Liege, following their unsuccessful pursuit of two previous targets. This summer, the Biancocelesti have lost key defenders Mario Gila to AC Milan and Alessio Romagnoli due to bureaucratic hurdles. After signing Danilho Doekhi on a free transfer, Lazio aims to bolster their defense by acquiring another player.

Earlier this season, Lazio showed interest in Sergio Dominguez, but negotiations with Dinamo Zagreb failed due to disagreements over transfer fee and terms. They also attempted to sign Noah Markmann from FC Nordsjælland, but the young Dane and his family refused to move. According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Lazio's new focus is on Hautekiet, a 24-year-old defender who has been with Standard Liege since 2023.

Despite the Roman newspaper believing Hautekiet is drawn to the opportunity to play for Lazio, the main challenge remains reaching an agreement on the transfer formula. Lazio has offered a loan with an option to buy, which could eventually become an obligation due to their current financial situation. However, Standard Liege prefers to keep Hautekiet under contract until June 2029, as they are satisfied with their current financial position and have no desire to accept terms they consider unfavorable.

Hautekiet, a product of Zulte and Club Brugge, has made 55 appearances in the Belgian top flight, scoring two goals and providing an assist. His current value is estimated at £4 million.
