Internal Security: After CSD Attack: Left-Wing Against Rapid Changes to the Law

The Left party rejects rapid tightening of laws following the Islamist terrorist attack on the sidelines of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin. Before discussing this, we need to examine why the available legal possibilities were not exhausted in the case of the later attacker Abdul B., said deputy parliamentary group leader Clara Bünger on ZDF's "Morgenmagazin".

For example, juvenile criminal law would have also opened up the possibility of issuing an arrest warrant in this case. Above all, however, the question arises as to why an Islamist who had been classified as a high-risk case by the authorities was not monitored more closely - and whether information from the Joint Counter-Terrorism Centre (GTAZ) was not properly transmitted to the court.

The later attacker had been classified as a danger by the police in January 2026, and the GTAZ, in which police authorities and secret services work together, had also dealt with him. The Berlin Office for the Protection of the Constitution had been aware of Abdul B. as early as November 2021. He had been sentenced to a juvenile prison term that had not yet become legally binding, but was at large.

On July 25, the 21-year-old had driven a car into several people on the sidelines of the CSD in Berlin and attacked others, presumably with a machete. One woman died, 31 people were injured. The Islamist was shot dead by police officers the following day, as he attacked them, according to the investigative authorities.

Today, special session of the Interior Committee

The Interior Committee of the Bundestag discusses the attack and the handling of Abdul B. in a special session today. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is to inform the MPs about the state of the investigations. Union parliamentary group leader Thorsten Frei (CDU) has already made it clear that he expects rapid tightening of laws as a consequence of the attack.
