Haugset takes Women’s Tour de France yellow jersey with long solo breakaway

Lorena Wiebes showcased her exceptional sprinting abilities once again, securing her second consecutive victory at the Women's Tour de France. The Dutch cyclist claimed the stage two win, clocking in at 3 hours, 42 minutes, and 8 seconds, ahead of Mauritius rider Kim Le Court Pienaar by 6 seconds. Amanda Pratt of Australia followed closely in third, 3 minutes and 20 seconds behind the leader.

The flat 147.9-kilometre stage from Aigle to Geneva marked the second Swiss leg of the race, where Wiebes demonstrated her dominance with a commanding sprint in the final 250 metres, marking her seventh overall victory at the Tour.

Wiebes' impressive performance extends beyond this stage, as she also triumphed in the opening stage held on Saturday, exhibiting her consistent winning streak. Her competitors did not fare as well, with Lidl-Trek rider Elisa Balsamo finishing second and Dutch legend Marianne Vos of Team Visma-Lease a Bike securing the third position.

Currently, Wiebes leads the overall standings by 14 seconds, with 2023 Tour champion Demi Vollering and fellow Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos trailing by two seconds each. The 156.5-kilometre (97.2-mile) hilly stage commencing in Geneva is set to cross into France and conclude in Poligny. This edition of the Women's Tour spans 1,175 kilometres (730 miles) over nine days.

Meanwhile, Australian cyclist Amanda Spratt remains in 68th place, 3 minutes and 20 seconds behind the spirited Wiebes, while Tadej Pogacar claimed his fifth men's Tour de France title last weekend, as reported.
