Haugset goes it alone to claim Tour de France Femmes third stage

Sigrid Haugset has triumphed in the third stage of the Women's Tour de France, claiming the coveted yellow jersey. The Norwegian cyclist successfully broke away from the main pack with roughly half of the 156.5-kilometre route still remaining. The grueling stage was marked by four graded climbs, which Haugset conquered with ease.

Haugset's decisive move came at the base of the Category Two Col de la Savine, with approximately 85 kilometres left to travel. Her lead was further solidified as she crossed the final Category Four Côte de Chaux-Champagny climb, followed closely by Lotte Kopecky, roughly 30 seconds behind her. A group of nine cyclists trailed more than two minutes behind the front-runner.

Lorena Wiebes, the previous yellow jersey holder who won the first two stages, lagged significantly behind at 13 minutes behind the main bunch at that point. She ultimately finished over 20 minutes behind Haugset and dropped to 67th place in the overall standings. The intense battle between Haugset and Kopecky in the final 10 kilometres led to Haugset increasing her lead, finishing 1:24 ahead of Kopecky.

The Women's Tour de France, the fifth edition of the race, spans a total distance of 1,175 kilometres over nine days. The overall standings are led by Kimberley Le Court of Mauritius in second place, four seconds behind Haugset, with three-time Tour champion Demi Vollering in third, a further four seconds behind Le Court.
