Glen Hansard's funeral under way in Dublin

Later today, a public wake will be held in Dublin for the late singer-songwriter Glen Hansard, in anticipation of his funeral the following day. The esteemed musician passed away on Wednesday at the age of 56 following a road accident, just after performing at a traditional session at The Wren's Nest pub. The Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin, will serve as the resting place for Hansard's body from 11am until 4pm.

The funeral service will be conducted at St Patrick's Cathedral in the heart of Dublin city centre at 1.30pm tomorrow. Public attendance at the funeral is welcomed, although access inside the cathedral will be restricted due to the anticipated large crowd. Music during the service will be provided by Hansard's cherished friends and family members.

Glen Hansard, born in Ballymun, Dublin on April 21, 1970, embarked on his musical journey at a tender age, initially performing on Dublin's city streets as a busker. Prior to forming The Frames in 1990, he gained recognition for his role as guitarist Outspan Foster in Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments. Hansard and his wife, Markéta Irglová, shared the honor of winning the Oscar for Best Original Song for their composition Falling Slowly in 2008. The funeral service will also be broadcast on the RTÉ News channel.
