Ghana introduces offshore mariculture as government prepares Blue Economy Bill

Ghana has taken a significant step towards expanding its Blue Economy by introducing offshore mariculture, according to the Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministry. This development is part of a broader strategy to transition from traditional capture fisheries to new forms of fish production, aiming to reduce pressure on declining wild fish stocks.

The provisional licence issued for commercial offshore marine aquaculture marks a pivotal moment in Ghana's efforts to responsibly utilize its marine resources and create new economic opportunities.

Minister Emilia Arthur highlighted that this initiative is a key component of the government's reset agenda for the sector, which aims to promote sustainable production and unlock new economic prospects. She emphasized that offshore mariculture will enable Ghana to leverage its marine resources in a sustainable manner, fostering investment and job creation within the Blue Economy framework.

The government has also prepared a comprehensive Blue Economy Strategy and policy framework, which aims to turn the country's marine and inland water resources into engines of inclusive economic growth, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. This holistic approach seeks to create jobs, attract investment, and promote innovation across various sectors, including fisheries, aquaculture, transportation, tourism, and renewable energy.

Ghana's coastline stretches over 550 kilometers, and its inland water resources, such as the Volta Lake, present numerous opportunities for economic development. The Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister underscored the government's commitment to transforming these water resources from mere extraction assets into assets that are managed, protected, and developed for long-term economic benefit.

A bill is currently under consideration by the Cabinet to establish the legal framework necessary for the implementation of Ghana's Blue Economy agenda.
