Ebola kills 1,700 in eastern Congo as the fastest-growing outbreak surges

An Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has caused 3,802 cases and 1,707 deaths, with the majority of infections originating from community transmission. The disease is primarily concentrated in Ituri province, accounting for nearly 90% of cases. Factors such as delayed contact tracing, access barriers, mistrust, armed group violence, and funding shortages have impeded control efforts.

No approved vaccines or treatments exist for the Bundibugyo virus responsible for the current outbreak. Clinical trials for post-exposure prophylaxis drugs and two vaccine trials are ongoing in the region. Over 100 healthcare workers have contracted the virus during the outbreak. The response is further complicated by a funding gap, attacks on health centers, ongoing conflict, and local mistrust. Clinical trials for potential treatments are underway in Ituri.
