Josh Heupel reveals hard truth about Tennessee football quarterback future

Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel revealed the harsh reality of the quarterback competition during the SEC media days on July 20. Heupel admitted that the loser of the competition between George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon may not return to the Vols in 2027, as it's common in the current college football era. Both young quarterbacks are highly touted, but only one will remain with the team long-term.

Depending on the clarity of the outcome, the loser may transfer to another school via the transfer portal. Heupel has experienced this situation before, such as with Tayven Jackson in 2022 and Jake Merklinger in 2024, who transferred to other teams after failing to secure the starting job. Heupel emphasized that the starter must prove themselves in games, recalling Joe Milton's brief tenure in 2021 before Hendon Hooker took over.

If the competition persists into 2026, both quarterbacks might return for the 2027 season. However, if the team struggles through a quarterback carousel that season, they might resort to the portal for a transfer in 2027. MacIntyre, a redshirt freshman, would be eligible for the NFL draft following the 2027 season, while freshman Brandon would have to wait another year for his chance at the starting job.
