Cyclospora: First Deaths Reported in Michigan Amid Severe Outbreak

Two Michigan residents have tragically died from cyclosporiasis, marking the first reported fatalities in connection with the state's ongoing outbreak, according to both the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC. These deaths appear to be the first publicly acknowledged fatalities tied to the nationwide Cyclospora outbreak, as reported by CDC and Michigan health officials.

Both individuals reportedly had significant underlying health conditions that may have been exacerbated by the illness and dehydration. As of the latest update on August 3, Michigan has reported a total of 11,234 cases and 193 hospitalizations related to the outbreak. State health officials have emphasized that while cyclosporiasis is generally not a life-threatening condition, fatalities from the illness are rare in the United States.

The CDC is currently aware of the two Michigan deaths and is actively investigating the source of the outbreak. Nationally, the CDC is also probing a multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce, which has affected at least 1,947 individuals and led to at least 98 hospitalizations across nine states.
