Who did Tigers get for Tarik Skubal? A look at the three prospects

The Detroit Tigers acquired three highly regarded prospects from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a late-night trade, as confirmed by The News' Chris McCosky. The prospects come from one of the league's most impressive farm systems, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Here's a closer look at the three prospects the Tigers received in return for Tarik Skubal:

First, Zyhir Hope, a 21-year-old outfielder, is the first of the trio. Hope had an outstanding season for the Dodgers' Double-A affiliate in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he hit 23 home runs and drove in 87 runs. His impressive statistics include a .293 batting average, .369 on-base percentage, and .530 slugging percentage, with an OPS of .899.

The prospect, who stands at 5-foot-10 and 193 pounds, was ranked the 63rd best prospect in baseball by Baseball America prior to the 2026 season. The Tigers acquired Hope from the Dodgers in a trade that occurred in January 2024.

Next is River Ryan, a 27-year-old right-handed pitcher. Ryan, who was drafted by the Padres in the 11th round of the 2021 draft, made his major-league debut with the Dodgers in April 2024. Despite missing the entire 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery, Ryan returned this season with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City.

His fastball can reach 100 mph, and he also has a tight slider. Ryan currently has a 4.95 ERA in eight starts this year, striking out 43 batters in 36.1 innings. Standing at 6-2 and 195 pounds, Ryan was ranked the seventh best prospect in the Dodgers' system.

Lastly, there's Brady Smith, a 21-year-old right-handed pitcher. Drafted by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2023 draft, Smith recently made his way to the Dodgers' High-A affiliate in Midland. He has made two starts for the team so far, recording a 3.88 ERA in six innings with 104 strikeouts and 27 walks. Smith's change-up is his best pitch, and his fastball can reach the mid-90s.

He had Tommy John surgery in 2024 after being drafted in 2023. Standing at 6-2 and 170 pounds, Smith was ranked the 17th best prospect in the Dodgers' system.
