Pakistan: Suicide bomber kills 14 at anti-militancy protest

A suicide bombing claimed 14 lives and left dozens injured during an anti-militancy protest in Kabal, Pakistan's Swat Valley. The demonstration took place outside a police station, where residents mourned the escalating militant violence and the government's perceived inability to protect citizens. Those present alleged authorities were not acting swiftly enough against militants.

The region, once home to Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban in 2012, had been a Taliban stronghold from 2007 to 2009. After Pakistan's military ousted the Islamist group, the area was re-secured by the state, but the Taliban has resurfaced recently, with the Pakistani Taliban, or TTP, being particularly active.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred when the bomber detonated himself in front of the police station. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the act, with the former stating that terrorists will never triumph over peace, national unity, and the state's authority. Militant attacks in Pakistan have surged recently, often targeting police and security forces.

The TTP, allied with Afghanistan's Taliban rulers, has been a source of tension between the two nations and is being actively pursued by Pakistan.
