Fast-moving wildfire in Washington state prompts evacuations

A fast-moving wildfire, fueled by strong winds and high temperatures, has prompted evacuations in eastern Washington state. The Old Trails Fire ignited around noon on Saturday, rapidly spreading through brush and grass in an open area. It swiftly moved north and east, heading towards residential zones. Spokane declared a state of emergency as residents evacuated, with orange and red flames visible from the highway.

As of Saturday night, multiple structures and homes were reported lost, though the full extent of the damage remained uncertain until the fire was under control. A thick plume of smoke permeated the region. As of the evening, approximately 4 square miles (10 square kilometers) of land had been scorched, according to Courtney James, a spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

James urged residents of Spokane to heed evacuation orders and remain vigilant to rapidly changing conditions. Firefighters reported zero containment of the blaze, and winds persisted, according to Jessica Watson, a spokesperson for the DNR. Avista, a power company, implemented public safety shutoffs in the area due to the heightened fire risk.

Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency on Saturday, citing unusually high temperatures and strong winds that had exacerbated record wildfires throughout the state. He commented on the dynamic nature of the situation, particularly in Spokane, during a press conference on Saturday. The National Weather Service issued a "particularly dangerous situation" red flag alert for eastern Washington.
