Washington wildfires scorch over 2,50,000 acres of land; trigger mass evacuations

Multiple wildfires scorched over 250,000 acres of land in Washington state on Saturday, forcing large-scale evacuations and power outages. Over 4,000 firefighters, supported by the National Guard and crews from several states, worked tirelessly to contain the blazes. Governor Bob Ferguson declared a statewide emergency, warning of a very serious situation with more than a dozen active fires.

The Old Trails Fire in Spokane, which erupted in the afternoon, rapidly spread through dry terrain, jumped the Spokane River, and threatened over 4,000 structures. Nearly 450,000 acres have burned across the state this summer. Despite zero containment, efforts to control the Old Trails Fire continued through the night. Several crucial facilities, including water treatment plants and hospitals, were evacuated due to the threat.

Power utility Avista imposed public safety shutoffs, leaving approximately 60,000 customers without electricity. As of Saturday evening, no reported fire-related deaths or injuries occurred. State officials emphasized the unprecedented nature of the situation, expressing shock at the scale of destruction.
