Assam flood situation improves as number of affected dips to 1.78 lakh

The flood situation in Assam showed a small improvement, with the number of affected people dropping to 1.78 lakh, according to an official bulletin. Despite the decline, the number of districts impacted by the flood rose to seven. No fatalities were reported in the state during the past 24 hours, maintaining the death toll at 82, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported on Saturday night. The Dikhow and Dhansiri rivers were still flowing above danger levels in Sivasagar and Numaligarh, respectively.

A total of 349 villages in the districts of Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Bajali, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, and Jorhat were affected by the flooding. Charaideo suffered the most, with 75,199 people impacted, followed by Sivasagar with 58,824 affected residents. On Friday, a total of 1.92 lakh individuals were affected across five districts.

Forty-four relief camps were actively providing shelter to approximately 15,000 displaced individuals, while 17 relief distribution centers were operating, catering to 5,569 people. Around 15,060 hectares of farmland remained submerged, and the flood claimed the lives of 6,765 animals. Infrastructure damage, including houses, roads, bridges, schools, and cattle sheds, was reported in various areas, the ASDMA bulletin highlighted.
