Google rolls back AI Google Earth feature a day after launch

Google swiftly withdrew its AI-powered feature, Nano Banana, from Google Earth just a day after its introduction. Initially, Google added Nano Banana to the platform, aiming to allow users to create infographics, view historical imagery, brainstorm real estate concepts, and perform various other tasks. However, this move inadvertently made it simple for users to spread misinformation within Google Earth, potentially depicting events like nuclear strikes or protests occurring at specific locations, or even showing Google's offices being overthrown by protesters.

In response to the backlash, Google announced it would remove the feature from Google Earth. The company acknowledged the trust users place in Google Earth for accurate representations of the world, highlighting that while geospatial professionals found it useful, others generated images that violated their policies. Despite the watermark SynthID indicating AI-generated content, the backlash was swift, with notable figures like Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, questioning the decision to integrate AI in every aspect of Google's products.
