Google nixes its Earth AI feature one day after launch, amid criticism it would spread misinformation

Google has discontinued its Earth AI feature, a day after its debut, following criticism that it might disseminate misinformation. The tool, part of the Google Earth satellite imagery mapping app, allowed users to use the AI image generator Nano Banana 2 to create fabricated images. Google claimed the feature aimed to inspire creativity in geography.

However, critics quickly highlighted the potential misuse of the tool for spreading misinformation, given its capability to superimpose images onto real maps without restriction. A BBC journalist sarcastically commented on the potential for online abuse of this AI-generated feature. Despite some geospatial professionals utilizing the tool for useful purposes, Google faced backlash over screenshots of generated imagery appearing to breach their policies.

In response to the criticism, Google announced that it is reversing the feature to implement more robust safeguards. The issue of AI image manipulation is a growing concern, as most web imagery can now be easily altered with access to an AI image generator, which Google provides, just like many other AI companies.
