Bringing physics down to Earth through rocket science

Trisha Muro, formerly a college lecturer, has penned a science book aimed at making physics engaging and relatable through the lens of spaceflight. Upon teaching high school physics, she encountered a student who believed the subject was more akin to "story" physics, a sentiment that stayed with her and inspired this work. Her book, titled "It’s (Just) Rocket Science: Exploring Physics Through Spaceflight Missions," tackles fundamental physics concepts by contextualizing them in the context of space exploration, ranging from the Apollo missions to Mars rovers.

Rather than weaving a narrative, Muro employs case studies, highlighting the involvement of female scientists who discuss how their research incorporates physics. The book features interviews with experts, concise explanations, and analogies, making complex topics accessible. Notable chapters include discussions on gravitational lensing and the dynamics of NASA's DART mission, which deflected an asteroid.

Muro shares her personal experience attending NASA Space Camp in the 1980s, donating proceeds from the book to fund scholarships for aspiring campers. She elucidates rocket launches and landings on other planets through Newton's laws of motion, using analogies like ice-skating to explain gravitational slingshots. Muro presents advanced physics topics, including Kepler’s laws, planetary transits, and relativity, while occasionally mixing imperial and metric units, which may cause slight confusion.

Despite minor inaccuracies in astrophysics, the book remains clear and engaging, making it an excellent resource for students below the university level. Its timely release coincides with the Artemis II mission, enhancing its appeal.
