Why an image-generated GLB needs more than an STL export button

A textured 3D preview can look convincing while still being a poor input for a slicer. The preview answers whether an asset reads well on screen. A printable mesh also needs a deliberate scale, closed surfaces, consistent orientation and geometry that survives the chosen print process. This development note comes from the Voxel3D example-asset pipeline. The starting assets were generated from…

When a 3D model is created from an image, it's essential to remember that an image-generated GLB requires more than just an STL export button. The preview provides only a superficial glance at the asset's readability on screen. A printable mesh demands deliberate considerations, including scale, closed surfaces, consistent orientation, and geometry suitable for the chosen print process.

The development note originates from the Voxel3D example-asset pipeline. The initial assets were generated from reference images, with the printable versions prepared separately. The process begins with the GLB, which involves validating the geometry rather than blindly altering the mesh. A Python script using NumPy and Trimesh can perform this validation, reporting on triangles, finite vertices, watertightness, winding consistency, volume, and extents.

For example, when inspecting a Trail Explorer STL, the validation reported 99,830 triangles, finite vertices, watertightness, consistent winding, a volume of 21,507.8 mm³, and extents of 44.5, 31.8, and 90.3 mm. The absence of these factors can cause issues during printing, such as support placement, minimum wall thickness, tolerances, and the printer's ability to accurately reproduce the model.

To ensure optimal results, it's crucial to make coordinate and scale decisions explicit in the pipeline. The source GLB was loaded as a scene, its transformed mesh parts collected, and coordinates converted from glTF orientation to printing orientation. Scaling occurred before voxel reconstruction, giving the voxel pitch a physical meaning.

The relationship between the smallest feature to be kept and the reconstruction pitch is vital, as a narrow connection with too few voxels can disappear during the process. Any orientation or scale change should be inspected for bounding dimensions and contact with the build plate, as automated validation cannot determine whether a character is facing the right direction or whether the base is useful for the intended print.

Lastly, the reconstruction process should precede mesh smoothing. Applying smoothing to a floating-point voxel field before extracting the surface can lead to the loss of thin connections and the appearance of degenerate geometry in the resulting mesh. A recommended approach is to extract a surface from the binary solid field, followed by Taubin smoothing on the mesh. This order of operations ensures that the final mesh retains its essential features and maintains its structural integrity during the printing process.
