After the Midterms: What a Democratic Congress Means for Ukraine — Interview with Kurt Volker

Democrats have secured control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress in the midterm elections. Host Henry Keen interviews Kurt Volker, former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO, about the implications of this shift for Ukraine policy.

Firstly, the new Democratic majority in the Senate will enable them to initiate and pass legislation on Ukraine, forcing President Trump to either veto or sign it. This gives Democrats the power to take the initiative on foreign policy and budget issues. Secondly, the election results indicate that Trump has lost the support of his MAGA supporters, who are unhappy with his handling of the Iran war, high prices, and other issues.

Consequently, Democrats will enter January with a majority more favorable toward Ukraine and skeptical of Russia.

Volker believes this situation will put pressure on Trump to decide on aid to Ukraine, but notes that he has indicated he will veto any Democratic legislation. Nevertheless, the Democrats could attempt to override his veto by securing a two-thirds majority, which would require the support of several Republicans. Furthermore, the election suggests that some Republicans may feel more comfortable openly supporting Ukraine, as they were previously hesitant to speak out due to fear of Trump's disapproval.
