Dubai Municipality has unveiled its inaugural fully electric waste collection truck, as part of a broader initiative to enhance the efficiency and environmental friendliness of the city's cleaning services. This new vehicle represents a significant step towards modernizing the Municipality's fleet and embracing cleaner energy in its day-to-day operations.
Designed to navigate various parts of Dubai, the vehicle aligns with the emirate's sustainability goals and contributes to the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, which targets a 18% reduction in waste generation and aims to divert all waste from landfills by 2041.
The electric truck is capable of operating for up to 150km on a single charge, fueled by three lithium-ion batteries weighing approximately 2.2 tonnes in total. Its fast-charging capability allows the battery to recharge from 20% to 80% in just one hour and 45 minutes using a 160kW charger, ensuring the vehicle remains operational for daily waste collection activities.
With a storage capacity of 19 cubic meters and a load capacity of up to 11 tonnes, the truck can handle various types of waste containers, from 1,100-litre to 120-litre bins. Additionally, it features an electric waste compactor for efficient waste handling during collection, including emptying community bins and directly gathering waste from homes.
Equipped with smart cameras, the vehicle enhances road safety by improving the driver's visibility and maneuverability, thereby minimizing risks to workers and other road users. Saeed Safar, Director of the Waste Operations Department at Dubai Municipality, emphasized that this electric vehicle marks a crucial step in updating the Municipality's fleet.
The truck's performance in Dubai's climate will be assessed to determine its suitability for wider use across municipal services. A specialized team has been trained to operate and maintain the vehicle, ensuring smooth operations on two shifts, each lasting 16 hours a day.
