OBS Studio is the screen recorder I should have used all along, and my setup now starts in one click

Two launch parameters turned OBS into a one-click replay recorder that runs on Windows and Linux

OBS Studio is the screen recorder I should have used all along, and my setup now starts in one click

Years ago, I was a devoted user of Nvidia ShadowPlay for capturing gameplay and desktop recordings. I never considered using OBS Studio, believing it to be a streaming platform rather than a tool for replay recording. However, OBS Studio turned out to be the screen recorder I wished I had adopted sooner. With a single click, my setup now begins recording, thanks to the built-in replay buffer feature.

OBS’s replay buffer operates similarly to ShadowPlay's Instant Replay, keeping a rolling window of recent footage that can be saved with a hotkey. Unlike ShadowPlay, OBS stores the buffer in RAM, which provides a smoother recording experience. Additionally, OBS offers enhanced audio capabilities, allowing up to six audio tracks and the ability to isolate specific app audio.

The encoder control in OBS gives users more flexibility in choosing codecs, rate control, and bitrate settings. The main drawback of using OBS for replays was the need to manually start it, but that issue has been resolved by using the --startreplaybuffer parameter during setup. This parameter and the --minimize-to-tray option ensure that OBS launches automatically and stays out of the way.

To set it up, I copied my OBS shortcut, modified its properties to include the parameters, and placed it in the startup folder for automatic launch. OBS's performance may be similar to ShadowPlay's, but both rely on the GPU's hardware encoder, making the cost of running a buffer comparable. The trade-off lies in the RAM-based buffer of OBS versus the storage-based buffer of ShadowPlay.

Despite the time spent configuring OBS, I haven't missed a moment since setting it up. For those who edit clips, add commentary, record their desktop for work, or use both Windows and Linux, OBS is undoubtedly worth the effort. However, if you only save and share, ShadowPlay remains a viable option.

Python Queues: How At-Least-Once Delivery Impacts Reliability of Logistics User Reminders

Short answer: at-least-once delivery makes a reminder system safer against lost work, but it makes duplicate work an expected outcome.

  • At-least-once delivery increases reliability by preventing lost work in logistics reminders.
  • System treats queue as attempt, not confirmation, leading to duplicate delivery attempts.
  • Idempotency record and bounded storage improve latency vs. cost trade-off.

PGHist | History and audit of table changes in PostgreSQL

Hello community! I have developed PGHist — an open-source utility designed for saving, auditing, and viewing table change history in PostgreSQL. 🎯 Target audience: PGHist is specifically tailored for medium-sized projects and low-load tables within larger systems .

  • PGHist tracks and displays change history in PostgreSQL tables for medium-sized projects.
  • Users enable tracking with pghist.histenable() and view logs by row, field, or specific timestamps.
