Politicians react to Trump's decision to replace chief of staff Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller

United States President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller, a trusted aide and key figure in his immigration policy, as the new chief of staff. The appointment was announced on Friday via Trump's social media platform, with Miller expected to take over on Monday, November 9, 2026. Miller currently holds the position of Deputy Chief of Staff and will succeed Susie Wiles, who will transition to a role in the President’s political operation, having served since January 2025 as Chief of Staff.

Trump praised Miller as one of his most trusted advisers and thanked Wiles for her outstanding service. Miller, a long-time associate of Trump since his 2016 presidential campaign, has played a significant role in shaping the President’s immigration policies, most notably in the 2018 policy that led to the separation of migrant families at the US-Mexico border.

Wiles, known for her political acumen, became the first woman to serve as White House Chief of Staff in January 2025 under Trump’s second term. This move comes after the Republican Party's loss of control in both chambers of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections, a shift that may limit Trump’s ability to push forward his legislative agenda and address his policy priorities in the final two years of his presidency.
