Trump Names Migration Hardliner Miller New Chief of Staff

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday, Nov. 6, that Stephen Miller will become his new White House chief of staff, effective Monday, Nov. 9. Miller, 41, currently serves as deputy chief of staff and homeland security advisor. He is described by Channel News Asia as one of Trump's most trusted advisors and a hyper loyalist who has been a close aide for more than a decade.

Miller is recognized as the architect of the administration's hardline immigration policies and has been instrumental in driving a mass deportation program.

Miller succeeds Susie Wiles, who is the first woman to hold the position. According to the Jerusalem Post, Wiles submitted her resignation on Thursday. Wiles, who managed Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, will move to Trump's political operation. The Jerusalem Post notes that Wiles had previously been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year but announced in September that she was cancer-free.

The leadership change follows a midterm election in which Republicans lost control of both the House and Senate to Democrats. Kyiv Post and Le Monde English report that Miller has faced criticism regarding the administration's mass deportation program, specifically citing the fatal shooting of two protesters by immigration agents in Minneapolis in January.
