App Store 2026 in numbers: AI, pricing, abandoned apps

In 2026, 9.8% of the 178,637 apps featured in the App Store top charts across 173 countries and regions mentioned AI, GPT, machine learning, generative or chatbot capabilities in their name or description. These AI-focused apps were primarily found in the Graphics & Design, Photo & Video, and Developer Tools categories. Despite this, the average star rating for AI apps and regular apps remained very similar, with AI apps averaging 4.49 stars compared to 4.4 stars for others.

When it comes to in-app purchases, subscriptions, trials or Pro unlocks, 26.7% of the 164,056 free-to-download apps disclosed such features in their descriptions. The Graphic Design and Photo & Video categories led the way, while Shopping and News came in last. Many of these apps likely generate revenue through means other than in-app transactions.

According to the source's definition, 67.3% of the apps in the charts were developed by independent creators. This group's ratings matched those of larger publishers, averaging 4.41 stars among apps with at least 50 ratings. The highest rating share for independent apps was seen in the Developer Tools, Sports, and Navigation categories, while the lowest share was in the Games category.

Despite 70.9% of the apps having been updated within the past six months, a significant portion of apps remained stagnant. Specifically, 20.3% of apps hadn't been updated in over a year, and 9.8% hadn't been updated in more than three years. The Books, Reference, and News categories had the highest number of abandoned apps, while Finance apps had the fewest.
