US Democrats sweep Republican-held state legislatures in ‘blue cataclysm’

US Democrats' sweeping victory in the recent midterms extended beyond the US Congress, as the party claimed control of several state legislatures previously held by Republicans. According to data from NGO State Navigate, Democrats won majorities in at least five state legislatures, flipping 11 chambers from Republican control, according to a report on Wednesday.

The victories grant Democrats the power to shape policy decisions on critical issues such as healthcare, taxation, and education. Chaz Nuttycombe, State Navigate's executive director, stated that Democrats are on track for their largest net gain in state legislative seats in the 21st century, calling it a "blue cataclysm."

Notable wins include Texas, where Democrats regained the lower chamber after a 20-year gap, and Georgia, where Keisha Lance Bottoms secured the governorship for the first time in over two decades. Democrats also secured complete control of government in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and were poised to do the same in Arizona. Experts suggest that these state-level gains could help bypass potential national-level gridlock resulting from President Donald Trump's veto power.
