Rwe, a major energy company based in Germany, plans to invest nearly a billion euros in Italy between 2026 and 2031. More than half of this investment will be directed towards wind energy, while the remaining funds will be allocated to solar, agrivoltaic projects, and battery storage systems. This investment strategy was discussed during an inauguration event in Enna for an advanced agrivoltaic project of 9.5 MWac.
Rwe currently operates around 670 MW of installed capacity in Italy, spread across 18 onshore wind parks, a solar project, and three agrivoltaic installations. An additional 200 MW of capacity is under construction through wind and solar projects. The company aims to reach a total installed capacity of one gigawatt by 2030, expanding the national production and diversifying technologies.
According to Paolo Raia, Country Chair of Rwe Renewables Italia, "We plan to invest approximately one billion euros in Italy from 2026 to 2031, with over half of the investment going towards wind energy and the rest towards solar projects, including agrivoltaic systems, and battery storage solutions." The integrated development of these technologies is crucial for supporting the growth of renewables and contributing to a more flexible, resilient, and secure national electricity system.
Through these investments, Rwe aims to make a tangible contribution to the country's decarbonization and energy security goals, while also generating long-term value for the territories and communities where they operate. Rwe's Italian structure employs over 200 people, including project managers, engineers, technicians, and operators, with offices in Milan and Rome.
The company's portfolio covers the entire life cycle of projects, from site selection to development, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning or repowering. Wind energy remains the primary component of Rwe's portfolio, including projects such as Morcone (57 MW), San Severo (54 MW), and Mondonuovo (53.1 MW). Recently commissioned renewable projects include Serra Palino (47 MW) in Puglia.
The company is also expanding its agrivoltaic operations in Italy, having developed the world's first commercial agrivoltaic projects. The portfolio includes Morcone (9.8 MWac) and Acquafredda (9.3 MWac), with the recent addition of Enna. Two more agrivoltaic projects are expected to be operational in the coming weeks. Sicily is also home to Rwe's Bosco solar project, capable of generating nine MWac.
At Enna, the company has integrated agriculture with the wind farm, allowing for rotational grazing of approximately 400 sheep within the facility, with the sheep's milk destined for local agri-food processing to produce certified Dop cheese. On Sicily's Ragusa island, Rwe has started constructing Italy's first battery storage system, which will help store excess electricity and improve the flexibility of the electrical system while integrating renewable energy sources.
