Guinness World Records has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo's record-breaking international career after Portugal announced his retirement from the national team following 23 years of service. The global record-keeping organization noted in a post on X that the 41-year-old forward left international football with the most caps and goals in men's international football.
Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal in August 2003 and went on to captain the team to victory in the 2016 European Championship. He also helped Portugal secure the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. Following weeks of uncertainty over his international future, Ronaldo's retirement announcement put an end to speculation, with his final appearance coming in Portugal's 1-0 victory over Wales on September 24.
The retirement comes as Ronaldo leaves the national team as its most-capped player and highest scorer, having netted 146 goals in 234 appearances.
