‘Four men approached with bottles’ – Lekzy Decomic recounts frightening stage experience over inappropriate joke

Ghanaian comedian Lekzy Decomic recounted a terrifying incident from his early career when inappropriate jokes led to a rapid exit from a stage performance. The event took place in 2015 at a Sala-Fest gathering, and the comedian made jokes about people from northern Ghana. In an interview with Joy Prime, Lekzy admitted that he was still learning the nuances of stand-up comedy and had not yet grasped the importance of tailoring his jokes to different audiences.

He explained that, despite the inherent humor in his jokes, not every audience reacts positively. When a particular joke about "Northerners" failed to resonate with the crowd, four men approached the stage carrying bottles, compelling Lekzy to make a quick exit. The comedian struggled to remember the exact sequence of events but recalled that he eventually sought refuge in his hotel room, finding it difficult to sleep due to the embarrassment of his underwhelming performance.

Lekzy emphasized the significance of reading an audience and adjusting his material if the crowd showed little interest. He noted that comedians should capture the audience's attention within the first minute of a performance, and if the crowd remains disengaged, they must swiftly adapt their content or leave the stage. This incident served as a pivotal moment in Lekzy's career, prompting him to become more acutely aware of audience reactions and the necessity to adapt his jokes accordingly.
