2027 AFCONQ: Black Stars ‘have to win’ doubleheader against Somalia – Odartey Lamptey

Former Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has emphasized that the Black Stars must secure victories in both their upcoming matches against Somalia or risk missing out on the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The national team, which failed to qualify for the previous edition in 2025, is now on the precipice of a second consecutive absence after losing both of their first two qualifiers.

The Black Stars suffered humiliating 2-0 and 4-2 defeats at the hands of Ivory Coast and The Gambia respectively, in their opening Group C games.

Odartey Lamptey, speaking to Asempa FM, warned that if Ghana wants to secure a place in the AFCON, they must win the upcoming double-header against Somalia, set to be hosted at the Essipong Sports Stadium on November 12 and 16. He added that the newly appointed coaching staff, led by interim head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, will need to do everything possible to ensure Ghana comes out on top in these crucial matches.

"The coaches who have been given the job will have to do whatever it takes to win these two matches," Odartey Lamptey stated.

The former Ghana international also highlighted the importance of the national call-ups, stating that they not only market and elevate player values, but also raise the players' morale and sense of belonging. He urged the players to approach the call-ups with passion and commitment, as it is a privilege to represent their country.

As the Black Stars prepare for their upcoming fixtures, Björkegren is set to unveil his starting lineup this week. The 2027 AFCON will be a joint event, hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, taking place from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
