More fast-track courts for rape, POCSO trials

The Union Cabinet has approved the expansion and enhancement of 850 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), with a focus on expediting rape and child sexual abuse trials. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed the scheme, which will be implemented across 29 states and Union Territories with a total financial commitment of Rs 3,788.04 crore.

Currently, there are 779 FTSCs, including 399 dedicated POCSO courts, which will be expanded to 850 courts. Each court will have a dedicated judicial officer, a special public prosecutor, and six support staff to ensure swift resolution of pending cases. The Centre will provide financial assistance under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme to cover operational expenses.

The initiative aims to bring time-bound trials for rape and sexual offences against children, with a particular emphasis on districts experiencing a high caseload.
