Momentum vs Weather & Clock Dashboard: Which Firefox New Tab Extension Wins?

Momentum is the well-known standard for new tab extensions in Firefox, offering users a daily photo, quote, time, and a focus field. It has been a popular recommendation for years. However, in 2021, Momentum transitioned to a freemium model. The basic version remains free, but the weather feature became a paid add-on, Weather Plus at $3.33 per month, equating to $40 annually. While this pricing is reasonable for some, it raises questions for users who mainly seek weather and clock functionalities on their new tab.

The author sought a free alternative that fulfilled their basic needs, which included current weather, multi-day forecasts, world clocks for various cities, no account requirement, and a free service without hidden costs. Momentum's free tier offers time, focus, and a background photo, but crucially, weather is not included. Several alternatives were examined, including Tabliss, Tab Override, Start.me, and Weather & Clock Dashboard.

Weather & Clock Dashboard stands out as a viable free option, offering a 3-day forecast, multiple world clocks, and a search bar, all without requiring an account. It's open-source under the MIT license, making it a compelling choice for users seeking functionality over aesthetics. The design, while not visually striking, is functional and unobtrusive, focusing solely on providing the necessary information.

The decision between Momentum and Weather & Clock Dashboard depends on personal priorities. For those who value a beautiful, inspiring new tab interface and the added benefits of daily quotes and focus management, Momentum Plus remains the go-to choice. For users primarily interested in weather and time zone information, especially those using Firefox, Weather & Clock Dashboard provides a free, efficient alternative.

It's available for download on the Firefox Add-ons website, catering to users who value simplicity and accessibility over premium design aesthetics.
