Dinner, bids and second chances for Penang’s strays

On November 15, rescue organizations HaiwanKu Penang and Anna Rescue are hosting an event called The Paws Affair 2026 at Seven Terraces Hotel in George Town. The purpose of the evening event is to raise funds for the care of stray animals, which may require weeks or even months of medical treatment and rehabilitation. Founder Anna Ayuda of Anna Rescue explains that turning sympathy into tangible help is the goal, as every contribution aids in providing veterinary treatment, recovery, and neutering/spaying to dogs and cats in need.

Lois Liew, founder of HaiwanKu, emphasizes that when animals lack voice, we are responsible for their welfare. The Paws Affair will commence at 6pm with welcome drinks, talks on animal welfare, and a veterinarian's presentation. Guests will move to Kebaya Restaurant for a Peranakan dinner at 7pm, accompanied by orchestral music, live performances, and a T-shirt modelling showcase featuring kebaya ensembles for cats and dogs designed by Malaysian designer Melinda Looi.

The main fundraising auction begins at 9pm, featuring donated items such as a collector's watch, jewellery, oil paintings, beauty treatments, sunglasses, cookware, and tableware. Unusual lots include kebaya creations crafted specifically for animals.

While no specific fundraising goal has been set, organizers acknowledge that raising more funds would enable the groups to assist more animals. Founder Ayuda expresses gratitude for the existing support, as many people are currently facing financial hardships. Attendees can also contribute through direct donations if they are unable to attend the event.

To secure a ticket or donate, one can transfer money to the Public Bank account (3245 715 021) with the reference 'The Paws Affair' and inform Lois Liew at 012-438 8373 of their booking or contribution. Further information can be obtained by contacting Lois Liew.
