'Friendslop' Added to the Collins Dictionary, Beaten to Word of the Year by 'Mogging'
Friendslop has been mogged hard by mogging. Friendslop is chopped, and mogging is sigma. It’s cooked, and mogging has been hard mewing in its looksmaxxing era. One is sus and the other is farming aura.
The Collins Dictionary has added a host of new terms from Gen Alpha slang, including "mogging" as its word of the year and "friendslop," a video game term. "Friendslop" refers to a low-budget, independently produced video game designed for casual play with friends. The new dictionary definition of "friendslop" is, "a type of low-budget, independently produced video game, designed to be played casually with a group of friends."
It joins words like "fricy," meaning a food that's both fruity and spicy, and the less enjoyable "P(doom)" which estimates the probability of AI causing human civilization's collapse.
Mogging means to outshine in any aspect, such as height, status, wealth, or looks. For example, the author mentions mogging at Apex Legends. Alex Beecroft, MD Collins, explained that Collins lexicographers not only track how often words are used but also analyze patterns of usage. The selection of "mogging" as Collins' Word of the Year shows how each generation marks its language. It highlights how Gen Z and Gen Alpha adopt words, turn them into humorous slang, and make the language their own.
For those unfamiliar with "friendslop," the author recommends playing "Big Walk," arguably the best game in the genre released this year. Released alongside "Big Walk," "friendslop" has seen a surge in popularity, with games like Peak, Gamble With Your Friends, Lethal Company, and R.E.P.O. enjoying millions of sales on Steam and numerous clones on platforms like Roblox.
