2027 AFCONQ: Black Stars must focus on Somalia game to revive hopes – Ibrahim Tanko
Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko has urged the players to focus on their upcoming double-header against Somalia as Ghana seek to revive their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. Interim Ghana assistant coach Ibrahim Tanko has admitted that the Black Stars are in a difficult situation following their poor performance in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tournament. The senior national team has struggled, suffering a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouake and a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
These back-to-back losses led to Carlos Queiroz's dismissal, leaving Ghana searching for a new head coach. The GFA and Ministry of Sports and Recreation have set up a five-member committee to recommend a suitable replacement. Meanwhile, Tanko and four others - Kim Lars Björkegren, Godwin Attram, and Fatau Dauda - have been given the task of guiding the team through their upcoming matches against Somalia this month.
Despite the tough circumstances, Tanko views the opportunity to assist the national team as a privilege. He told Joy Sports that serving Ghana in different capacities has been a privilege for him. He emphasized that, while the situation is challenging, the team must be prepared to give their best. Ghana is set to face Somalia on November 12 and November 16, with the interim technical team expected to announce their squad this week.
The four-time African champions are eager to return to the continental showpiece after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
