Remove a Photo Background in the Browser: An On-Device Model, No Upload

I work on OnePassApps. We build browser studios that process files in the tab instead of uploading them, and this is the Image Studio's background remover. There is a specific reason this tool exists in the form it does: the subject is found by a model that runs on your machine. What the tab actually says Open the Image Studio and the page line is plain enough: "Convert, compress, resize, crop…

OnePassApps has developed a browser-powered tool called Image Studio's background remover. This tool processes files directly on your device, without uploading them, and the subject within the image is identified by a model that runs in the browser. The tool's webpage instructs users to "Open the Image Studio and convert, compress, resize, crop and clean images in your browser. Nothing leaves this tab."

The Remove background feature is organized into three stages. The first stage presents a blank source where users can either drop an image or browse for one. The second stage uses an on-device model to identify the subject of the image. This model downloads only once, the first time the user interacts with the tool, and the original image never leaves the device. The output of this stage is always a PNG image with transparent edges. Users should check fine details such as hair and soft edges before utilizing the tool.

When the output is generated, its size and format are displayed. Users can upload an image to start; the original file remains untouched. The file picker accepts JPEG, PNG, or WebP files up to 25 MiB and 25 megapixels in size. The processing remains confined to the browser.

During testing, a 240 × 240 pixel PNG image (5.3 KiB) was used. The first run had to fetch the model, which is clearly stated as "Loading the background removal tool…" and "Removing background…". After processing, the result panel read "Ready Before 5.3 KiB PNG After 8.8 KiB PNG Dimensions 240 × 240 File name probe-bg.png Background removed in 11.0 s Finished."

The output was 8.8 KiB PNG, 66% larger than the original, with 72.4% of the pixels fully transparent and the remaining 15,089 pixels remaining opaque. The original image had 0% transparency. The test image consisted of a flat blue square with an orange circle in the middle, and the tool accurately removed the blue background while preserving the orange circle.

Two important aspects to consider before using the tool on important images are highlighted. First, the model downloads only once, so the initial run is slower than subsequent runs. Second, users are advised to manually check the edges themselves, as fine hair and soft edges are where a small in-browser model is most likely to need human intervention.

The Image Studio web page also offers a range of other tools including Convert, Compress, Resize, Crop, Remove metadata, and Images to PDF, all accessible through the same tab without the need to upload files. If users want to explore the features in more detail, they can refer to the OnePassApps app guides or use the tool directly by accessing "Remove a background in the browser."

On-prem runtime security: what leaves your network

Does data leave your network with an on-prem integration runtime? It depends on the design. With the Neblex On-Prem Worker, our local integration runtime (often called an on-prem integration agent)…

  • On-prem integration runtime security focuses on data leaving the network and runtime needs.
  • Neblex On-Prem Worker communicates via one outbound encrypted connection on port 443.
  • Runtime maintains security with TLS 1.3, post-quantum key exchange, and no internet-exposed ports.

Personalized Welcome Emails with Reports (and Fewer Glue Layers)

Short answer: choose an email API by the smallest adapter that can send a personalized welcome email with a generated report, preserve authentication evidence, and make retries observable.

  • API should accept recipient and template data
  • Deliver standards-compliant messages
  • Return observable delivery events

My morning terminal: zoxide jumps, mise runs the project, starship shows context, fzf picks the file

You open a terminal many times every day, and most of the time, you follow the same five-minute sequence: get to your current project, run something inside the project, check the terminal prompt, open…

  • Zoxide replaces cd by jumping to project directories via z command
  • Mise automates project setup and build tasks in Node.js projects
  • Starship enhances terminal prompt with git branch and toolchain info
