Rawalpindi Development Authority plans major road rehabilitation scheme

RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has unveiled a major road rehabilitation and infrastructure improvement scheme, estimated to cost Rs68.98 million. According to a senior RDA official, the civic body had been occupied with the Rs47 billion Rawalpindi Ring Road project, leaving no room for road rehabilitation works in the past year.

The Punjab government did not approve two key RDA projects – the Murree Road expansion and repair of Murree Road. The RDA submitted a plan for Ch. Bostan Khan Road reconstruction from Chaklala Scheme-III to Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench, but the task was handed over to the Punjab Highway Department. The proposed scheme, "Framework Agreement for Rehabilitation/Repair of Roads, Footpaths, Storm Water Drains, Manholes and Road Marking at Different Roads of City", aims to address urban road repairs and maintenance.

Works such as rehabilitation and repair of roads, footpaths, storm water drains and manholes, and road marking across the city are included. The estimated cost, including taxes, is Rs68,983,836 and the project is expected to be completed in 12 months. Old Airport Road and Rawal Road have been identified as top priorities due to extensive repair needs.

The RDA plan is set to be submitted to the Punjab government for final approval and PC-I preparation. RDA spokesman Mohammad Irfan confirmed the civic agency's plans to commence the road development scheme.
