Netflix Will Give Joel Coen’s Gothic Mystery ‘Jack of Spades’ a Theatrical Release in 2027

Joel Coen's upcoming film "Jack of Spades" has been acquired by Netflix for a fall 2027 theatrical release, followed by its debut on the streaming service later in the year. The movie stars Josh O'Connor, Patsy Ferran, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville, and is described as a "sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands."

Written by Eleanor Catton, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, and Conor McPherson, "Jack of Spades" is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor's 1901 novel "The Alien: A Story of Middle Age." The project is produced by Robert Graf, Frances McDormand, Joel Coen, Ethan Coen, Steven Rales, and Graham Broadbent.

Executive producers include Donald MacKinnon. Bruno Delbonnel, known for his work on "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "The Tragedy of Macbeth," will serve as cinematographer, while Carter Burwell, a frequent collaborator of the Coens, will provide the film's score.

"Jack of Spades" follows the Coen Brothers' last joint venture, "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs," which premiered on Netflix in 2018 and earned nominations for three Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Song. Since then, Ethan Coen has focused on his own projects, including the 2024 lesbian comedy "Drive-Away Dolls" and the 2025 film "Honey Don't!"

It is rumored that the Coen Brothers may reunite soon on a horror project, though the details of their next collaboration remain undisclosed. Both Joel and Ethan Coen are represented by UTA, with attorney Pat Murphy also serving as their legal representative.
