MTTD anticipate significant reduction in road crashes as TraffiTech-GH is activated

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) anticipates a substantial decrease in road crashes following the activation of the automated traffic enforcement system, TraffiTech-GH. This technology is primarily focused on addressing speeding violations, with the goal of enhancing compliance with traffic regulations through automated detection and the use of digital evidence.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, revealed that road crashes saw a 9.4% reduction in September 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, with a 12.19% drop in the number of vehicles involved in crashes. Similarly, injuries from road crashes fell by 15.02%, and fatalities decreased by 7.82%.

Motorcyclists experienced a 7.43% reduction in crashes. ACP Obeng emphasized that the introduction of electronic caution notices has encouraged motorists to modify their behavior upon receiving evidence of their violations. Since the sensitisation campaign began, over 200,000 electronic caution notices have been issued, with more than 50,000 sent out since the recent phase started in September.

These notices contain vehicle details, registration numbers, owner information, date, time, location, and photographic/video evidence of the alleged offence. TraffiTech-GH, developed by the Ghana Police Service, employs cameras and sensors to capture instances of speeding and other traffic violations. The initiative targets speeding, as data indicates it accounts for 60-62% of severe injuries and fatalities in road crashes.

Mobile speed cameras and tripod-mounted cameras have been deployed in major urban centers like Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, Koforidua, Tema, and Ho.
