Man with mental condition, 27, stabbed woman, 31, at Kallang Wave Mall, planned to kill himself afterwards, gets 5.5 years in jail

Chua Jing Yuan, 27, was sentenced to five years and six months in jail for a stabbing incident that occurred at Kallang Wave Mall. The attack took place on July 14, 2025, when Chua allegedly heard a voice telling him to kill someone and end his own life by drinking bleach. He targeted a 31-year-old woman, slashing and stabbing her before fleeing the scene.

Chua pleaded guilty to attempted culpable homicide causing hurt and possessing offensive weapons in public. Mental health experts determined that Chua was suffering from major depressive disorder with psychotic features at the time of the incident, which significantly compromised his judgment and allowed for a diminished responsibility defense.
