Garden City University launches programme to support SHS students
Garden City University (GCU) has launched an academic enrichment initiative to help Senior High School (SHS) students adjust to Ghana’s revised education curriculum through practical learning, university-level instruction, and access to specialised facilities.
Garden City University (GCU) has introduced an academic enrichment program designed to assist Senior High School (SHS) students in adapting to Ghana’s updated education curriculum. Known as the GCU Pathways Programme, this initiative focuses on practical learning, university-level instruction, and access to specialized facilities.
The program aims to strengthen students' understanding of selected subjects and address learning challenges arising from the new curriculum, which emphasizes practical application, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Professor Eric K. Ofori, GCU's Vice-Chancellor, envisions the university as a leader in entrepreneurial education, with the Pathways Programme extending learning beyond traditional classroom settings. This approach promotes innovation, practical skills development, community engagement, and partnerships with secondary schools. According to GCU Director of Admissions Shannan Akosua Magee, the program aims to complement, not replace, teachers' roles.
It provides additional support, resources, and the expertise of university lecturers to help students navigate the revised curriculum and build confidence in their subjects.
The GCU Pathways Programme includes opportunities for students to interact with university lecturers, engage in practical learning activities, and tour laboratories and teaching facilities. These experiences are intended to help students connect classroom concepts with real-world applications and potential career pathways. The university's Business faculty led a pilot of the initiative at Prempeh College, benefiting about 138 Business students with supplementary instruction in Accounting and Business Management.
Following the pilot, GCU plans to expand the program to five other SHSs in the Ashanti Region, including Opoku Ware Senior High School (Health Sciences and Business), Bosomtwe STEM Girls’ Senior High School (ICT, Information Science, and Python Programming), Ejisu Secondary Technical School (Business, ICT, and Information Science), Kumasi Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (ICT, Information Science, Python Programming, and digital skills), and Serwaa Nyarko Senior High School.
Through this initiative, GCU aims to facilitate a smoother transition for SHS students under the revised curriculum, enhance academic preparation, and foster collaboration between secondary and tertiary institutions.
