Cyberattack hits Belgian supermarket fridges and freezers

A major cyberattack on Belgian supermarket 40 Delhaize, Carrefour and Spa and other supermarket chain stores has taken place, with €100,000 worth of food thrown away.

A cyber attack targeting refrigeration systems in Belgian supermarkets has resulted in the disposal of €100,000 worth of food, according to reports. The incident, which occurred between Sunday night and Monday morning, affected dozens of stores across multiple supermarket chains. Delhaize reported that 40 of their stores were impacted, while Carrefour confirmed at least 15 of their supermarkets were affected.

Spar also reported five stores being affected. Butchery group De Laet en Van Haver also confirmed that their fridges were targeted. Delhaize spokesperson stated that they immediately took necessary measures to ensure their stores remained operational. The cybercriminals responsible for the attack targeted the refrigeration systems of these stores.

This attack follows a similar incident in France last week, where hundreds of supermarkets belonging to Intermarché and Coopérative U chains were affected. Euronews is continuing to update its story and has reached out to Carrefour and Spar for comment.
